A view from riding up Mount Fig.

Mount Fig, Figalicious, the Big Fig, these are just some of the names for one of the best rides in California. The Mount Figueroa Ride starts in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley located just north of Santa Barbara. This beautiful valley, dotted with oaks, ranches and vineyards is surrounded by the rugged mountains of Los Padres National Forest and the San Rafael Wilderness.

We start this amazing ride from the town of Solvang, you will have a 10–15 mile warm-up depending on where you start in Solvang. As you approach Mount Fig on Happy Canyon Road, the mountains close in all sides. The road will abruptly start climbing upward as views of the mountains and Santa Ynez Valley expand around you. About half way up this 4400 foot high mountain, you will reach a junction to catch your breath. The best part of the ride begins here, the road snakes up the side of the mountain with epic views all around you. In the spring time, wild poppies coat the side of the mountain. The vibrant orange glow contrasts with the scattered groves of Ponderosa Pines and chaparral.

Some of the beautiful wildflowers you will see in the spring!

The road descend steeply down Mount Fig on the way to Los Olivos where you can refuel on snacks and fresh water on your return to Solvang. After your return to Solvang spend some time checking out local art and enjoying a refreshing glass of wine or beer. Enjoy a fun lunch or dinner at one of Solvang’s great restaurants.

Note: Mount Figueroa is a remote climb in rugged mountains. Be aware of weather in the winter and summer, temperatures can be very hot or cold. Part of the climb has a 1–2 mile very smooth section of dirt road. Be prepared to be self sufficient out here, there is no cell phone reception.
