1Tobacco breaks hearts” is the slogan chosen this year for World No Tobacco Day which happens today.

This slogan recalls that smokers greatly increase their risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. For example, “80% of infarction victims under the age of 45 are smokers,” noted the French Federation of Cardiology.

Tobacco kills more than 7 million people a year, including nearly 900,000 who do not even smoke, according to WHO. To protect yourself, doctors only have one tip: stop smoking, or never start to.

2 Escherichia coli bacteria (E. coli) are more likely to cause reactions in people with blood type A, said researchers.

They administered water containing a strain of E. coli to 106 healthy volunteers. In five days, 81% of type A or AB volunteers had moderate to severe diarrhea, compared with about half of blood group O or B patients.

The researchers hope that a vaccine targeting the bacterial protein — found on many strains of E. coli — could be effective in protecting the most-at-risk group A individuals.

3 After the first interactive movie released in 2016, the first film controlled by thought was created.

Richard Ramchurn, a researcher at the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) and specialist in human-computer interaction, wants to go further: his short film, The Moment, evolves according to the emotions of the spectators.

During the broadcast, according to the emotional activity of the spectators, measured thanks to an electroencephalogram (EEG) headset, certain scenes, music or animations will change. Unlike interactive movies, the story is continuously changing without explicit will on the part of the viewer.
