Already in 2017, Google announced to be working on a project that could potentially revolutionize the world of health. And for good reason: it would anticipate your future diseases or hospitalizations.
After two years of research, DeepMind and the Moorfields Ophthalmic Hospital have developed an artificial intelligence that can detect abnormalities on retinal scanners.
Google’s algorithm could predict especially heart diseases by looking into our eyes and deducing data by analysing scans of the back of a patient’s eye.
To made this discovery and train the system, the company used data from more than 284,000 patients. This information included eye scans but also general medical data.
According to Dr. King, this artificial intelligence is “generalized”, which means that it can study other types of images.
The next step? The team wishes to succeed in detecting cancers by training the algorithm to analyze radiotherapy and mammography scanners.
