Your power draws from the immortal flame that fuels the legendary phoenix. You or your ancestors perhaps rendered a phoenix a great service, or you were born in its presence. Whatever the cause, a shard of the phoenix’s power dwells within you. That power is a mixed blessing.

Since the release of the Unearthed Arcana I was into the idea of a Phoenix Soul Sorcerer. In my opinion it is a cool flavor to the sorcerer class and as we are starting to head into Waterdeep: Dragonheist, so this time I wanted to give the phoenix a try.

There are some threads on DnDBeyond and Reddit about the problematic subclass that is for some the Jean Grey Class in DnD 5e. The main problem about the Unearthed Arcana Phoenix Soul Sorcerer is, that it is focused around one ability: Mantle of Flame

The flavor of the Phoenix Soul Sorcerer in my opinion is top notch, but being able to hit off Mantle of Flame once for 1 Minute is taking me down a tad.

Since I released a revised version of the Phoenix Soul Sorcerer on DMs Guild I needed to update this post to exclude the details of the revision because of the Community Content Agreement.

In short the revision includes:

  • the Born from Fire feature (changing the previous Ignite),
  • the revised Mantle of Flame feature,
  • the Risen from the Ashes feature (changing the previous Phoenix Spark),
  • the unchanged Nourishing Fire feature,
  • the revised Form of the Phoenix feature,
  • a brand new organization of the Forgotten Realms — the Fellowship of the Phoenix
