Mother’s Day is associated with traditions of festivals honoring the mother celestial in ancient Greece and Rome.

Modern Mother’s Day traditions, on the other hand, started in the United States in the early 1900s. In the past Mother’s Day and its growth, these are some important events:

• Around the year 200, moms were honored in ancient Rome with galas and prayers at their tombs. As early as the 4th century, Christians knew about mother gods and celebrated motherhood with a pageant called “May Queen” or “May Mother Goddess.”
• In the 1800s, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia started “Mother’s Work Days” to teach girls in the area better ways to care for children. Anna Jarvis, her daughter, wanted to honor all mothers after her mother died, so she worked hard to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday.
  Andrew Jackson, who was head of the recognized Mother’s Day International Committee in 1907, made the second Sunday in May “Mother’s Day,” a legal holiday across the whole US to honor mothers.
• In 1911, Anna Jarvis’s work made it possible for Mother’s Day to become a real holiday in the United States. She led the charge for a national Mother’s Day, which helped make it what it is today: a holiday celebrating moms on earth.
