How Are We Still Blind to The Truth?

The Illusion of Subjectivity

Not to be pessimistic or anything, but death is around us everywhere.

Whether in real life, novels, or movies. We encounter death daily.

It’s scary how we’ve become blind to the truth of dying when we’re always surrounded by death. With all these reminders of our end — that can come at any time — we still act like we will live forever.

How can we live comfortably without a purpose, carelessly sinning and seeking materialistic possessions when death is standing beside us waiting for the written moment to take our lives?

I think that many of us who believe in the Day of Judgment and are not actively working for the afterlife they want, are not realizing how sudden death can be.

Death won’t give us a warning before it takes our lives, it will come suddenly without our notice. This is something that has been mentioned so many times in the Quran which only highlights its importance, and the fact that we are blind to it — hence the recurring warning.

Allah has described our state of negligence, many times in the Quran. He also told us why we are in this state.

In a surah of the Quran that we’re all familiar with, Allah describes this scary reality:

أَلْهَىٰكُمُ ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ ٱلْمَقَابِرَ

Competition for more ˹gains˺ diverts you ˹from Allah˺ until you end up in ˹your˺ graves.

(Surah Al Takathur)

When we fall into this trap of ostentation or showing off in this life, our vision of the one after starts fading, and our negligence towards the reality of it starts developing.

The ayah tells us that whoever enters this rivalry for more, will be neglectful of the Day of Judgment until their deaths; when it’s too late to change anything.

This image is scary, especially since we can see how this negligence is manifesting in our lives and our societies.

So let's leave this whirl of seeking to acquire more worldly goods and racing each other in wealth and possessions etc, and work towards the akhira we want.

Death is nearer than we all think, so let us not fall into the very thing we’ve been warned about; the delusions of this dunya.

May Allah put the dunya in our hands, not in our hearts
