Made using a type of material known as bijel, or bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gel, the researchers are able to adhere functional nanoparticles to the surface of polymer filters. Their study shows that a dense layer of silica nanoparticles can prevent the build up of slimy biofilms, which can block or contaminate the water flowing through these filters.
