Add “About the Author” Call to Action Button to Your Articles With a Single Link | SMedian Update

I was browsing Medium again last tonight and came across something so sad when I arrived at the bottom of this article by Larry Kim:

This is no knock to Larry. Many people have tried their own twist at “About the Author”. Larry is obviously a well established writer who has overcome all of the obstacles faced by writers. I would know because he is a contributor to my Marketing & Growth Hacking publication; his content is wonderfully insightful. The only thing left is for him to promote his other web profiles to tie his growing empire together. This should be the most trivial of them all, but it unfortunately is not. Not until now.

I decided to drop my calculus textbook (oooh I can’t wait to graduate in 2 weeks!) and crack out the feature so many users have been fighting to hack together for years here on Medium. I’m sure that Your Friends @ Medium would love to implement this feature but are working on even tougher and more exciting features for us all, and so I don’t blame them. It’s a tough problem to solve, so what I’ve produce is a simple MVP that I hacked together in a few hours as an added feature to SMedian.com (formerly SuperMeditor) that I will improve upon at a later date.

Data Points You Can/Must Enter

Title*, your name*, description, profile image url*, call to action(text and link for the button)*, Medium, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and GitHub urls of your choice. Note that the data points with * next to them are the only required ones.

I’m still looking for a better design, especially for a better placement of those social links, so if you’re a designer and want to solve that problem for us all, please shoot me your design :)

Future Features

Click Tracking

SMedian currently tracks clicks on each component of the embed so that you can gauge how much your audience is engaging with your embed. At a later date, I will make this data available on your writer profile for your viewing pleasure.

Email Capture Form (Added)

This has been a goal of SMedian for awhile and this will make the implementation even more intuitive than I had planned. It’ll of course be integrated with MailChimp with other API’s following thereafter. Stay tuned.

How to Make Yours

If you are already promoted as a writer, click the “My Profile” link in your dropdown menu at the top of any page to start editing your profile and embeddable call to action button.

Anyway, if you want to get your own embed Call to Action from SMedian, click the “Make Mine” link at the bottom of my embed above to go to the Smedian writers promotion page where Medium writers are promoting themselves to publication editors, promote yourself as a writer by clicking the button and logging in with your Medium account, and then click the “Edit My Writer Profile” button to start creating your embed button.

Once you’ve entered all of the required data points, make sure to hit save and once it is saved, you can copy the embed link by clicking the “Copy Me” button next to the green heart at the bottom of the preview. Go to your Medium article, paste that link and hit the enter key to watch your new “About the Author”, “Connect With Me”, “Hire Me” (or whatever you title it) embed show up.

Along with being embeddable, your call to action and social links will also appear in the list of writers on SMedian:
