Fulchand Shastri, a prominent Jain Scholar, meets with students and community members

On Sunday, December 10th, the Hindu & Jain Association at the University of Pennsylvania hosted scholar and speaker Fulchand Shastri for a lecture on the roots of unhappiness, expectations, and the nature of the soul, followed by some Q and A. Fulchand Shastri also highlighted the importance of genuinely connecting with others, rather than correcting what we may perceive as others’ faults or wrong beliefs. There were three animals that went on a hunt: a lion, a dog, and a donkey. After the hunt, the lion asked the dog to split their spoils. The dog proposes an even one-third split, to which the lion screams out in anger, “I killed the animals, but you want to share in my wealth?” The lion kills the dog, and he asks the donkey to propose a more fair split. The donkey says, “Take it all.” The message: we learn the lessons we learn from living out our lives, and the knowledge we gain from our academic and spiritual studies is meant to be applied. All in all, it was an enlightening lecture, and we are grateful that Fulchand Shastri was able to fit us in during his visit to the United States.
