The DCCC Is Working Against The Progressive Community, and Therefore Against Itself

Leftist politics have changed, but the DCCC hasn’t.

Laura Moser is running for Texas’s 7th district as a Democrat. She’s a progressive activist who is endorsed by Justice Democrats and Political Revolution. She’s the founder of Daily Action, and is highly praised by her peers; even more so, she’s running a great campaign as a candidate and has outraised her 6 other opponents.

Last week, on February 22nd, the DCCC posted an opposition memo against her in an attempt to smear her campaign.

Then, within the past few days, DCCC memos were leaked. One was found from October 2nd, 2017 — right after the Las Vegas Shootings — advising its members not to speak out about gun violence, and went as far as to say that members should only offer “thoughts and prayers”.

What they’re not doing, and what any responsible Political Committee should do, is actually talk about the issues and how they affect people.

They also don’t see how someone like Laura Moser might actually help the people of TX-7, or why they might be excited in someone like her in the first place. If anything, the left-leaning populice of America has sent a resounding cry; we don’t want the status quo anymore.

Some of us even dare to dream of Medicare For All. It’s not radical, it’s something that almost every other major country has. The DCCC thinks otherwise. Leaked memos from the DCCC suggest that members of the House not consider Medicare for All as a viable solution to the nation’s healthcare crisis.

I find myself wondering, what does Democratic Leadership actually have to gain by any of this? If they think that refraining from speaking about important issues about gun control and Medicare for All is going to help people, they’re wrong.

Unfortunately, the DCCC is not too interested in what is best for the people. They’re interested in money and keeping the status quo so they can continue to fundraise off of their message, which simply just isn’t cutting it. Any message that involves purposefully distorting or silencing voices that would otherwise speak out about issues, is no message that is deserved of people’s belief and especially money.

Speaking of which, I want to thank the DCCC, since their stunt has boosted Laura Moser’s fundraising. Laura raised $20,000 in the first day after the DCCC published their opposition memo, and over $100,000 to date.

Before we’d sent out a fundraising email about this — I think we sent it at 5 p.m., my time — we’d raised $20,000. Now it’s a donation every second. And you what? I’d trade it all to have a functional Democratic Party that had unity and wanted to win.

The progressive community has made a resounding call to the DCCC and Democratic leadership: we just don’t need you anymore. Not only that, we believe in our message, the message of the people more than yours. If the Democratic party wants to survive, it will start supporting progressives and not working against them.

Democratic leadership may be hopeful that in 2020, America will have had enough of Donald Trump and people will be willing to elect any Democratic candidate they prop-up. That’s just not true. More than that, as we look towards the future, we have to realize that the power to change the future is in our hands now. And being silent about important issues like gun control and Medicare For All is not the way to change things.

People are starting to rise up into a real Political Revolution, the likes of which haven’t been seen in a long time. Just a few nights ago, Democrats won two more seats — one in NH and one in CT. We’ve taken 39 seats since Trump has been elected. And it isn’t because voters believe in keeping everything the same.

Does the DCCC not understand? That’s what got Trump elected in the first place.

To the Democratic Party leadership: We need now, more than ever, to come together. To stop thinking about things in a binary fashion and accepting change. Not only that, but to drive change forward and to recognize when change is needed. To be fearless in the face of hate and educate in the face of ignorance. And to stop our reliance on money! Grassroots dollars go to grassroots candidates when the message is right, but if we prop ourselves on a structure of money instead of people, then everything falls apart.

It’s time to change things, and it’s time to start listening to the voters.

That is why we are calling on progressives to call DNC leaders to ask that they support the platform made at the Unity Reform Commission and to speak out at the DNC meeting in the coming week. Please view the details on Reddit and get involved.

Solidarity,
