Timberview High School Did Not Have a School Shooting

On Wednesday, October 6th 2021, a school shooting was reported at Timberview High School, located in Texas. Four students were hurt, and the shooter got away, but later turned himself in. The incident was caused by a fight, in which the shooter pulled out a gun and accidentally hit four other people. When one looks at this incident in comparison to other school shootings, the MOs simply don’t pare up. So why is this labelled as a school shooting? The reason is simple.

The shooter was black.

Although Columbine occurred in 1999, it has lived on as one of the most devastating school shootings in American history, despite not having the highest count of victims. Unlike Columbine, the incident at Timberview High School had one perpetrator, and that person was also black. This factor alone garnered great attention because it was combined with the label “school shooting”. The media, whether literary or visual, uses clickbait to get more attention, and the headlines about the incident are a prime example.

America has a running issue with gun violence, and many of the victims of gun violence are in black and brown communities. Interestingly enough, Timberview High School is a predominantly black school, followed closely by Hispanic…
