Exploring and examining some of the most prominent fashion trends and youngster styles to come out of Tik Tok, and how to incorporate this newborn Tik Tok influence into our own personal wardrobe!

Over the past few years, Tik Tok has quickly risen to one of the most-used social media platforms in the world. An over-downloaded app with over 800 million users, many being various creatives sharing their artistry, it is only natural that the site would have influence over contemporary youth and fashion trends.

In the Tik Tok universe, fashion is broken down into sub-categories called aesthetics. Different aesthetics focus on a time period, a specific way of living, or setting. Oftentimes, they are associated with certain feelings and emotions, and their dedicated followers do their best to participate in activities that are associated with their desired aesthetic.

Aesthetics aren’t only about fashion and lifestyle, but mindset as well. How one views the world has a huge impact on ones actions and attitudes, and oftentimes people involved in these communities believe in the same philosophies and visual references.

Similar to instagram reels, but through videos, songs, dances, short attention span and enormous influencers and followings, Tik Tok helps to identify some top trends in style and fashion that have come out of this melting pot. Feel free to incorporate any of these lifestyles below according to your likings.

Dark Academia

Among the most popular of the aesthetics, Dark Academia fashion features muted colours, natural makeup looks, and modest, studious clothing closely resembling school uniforms. This aesthetic is seen as a rebellion on the fact that in recent times, STEM subjects have been made a priority in our society. While this isn’t inherently a bad thing, it means that subjects such as art, literature studies, history, and music have been pushed aside, and in other cases, are even seen as a waste of time. Dark Academia is a way to reclaim the fine arts, and push it to the forefront once again.

To fully embody this aesthetic, consider taking part in activities such as handwriting letters in ink and plume, going to museums and galleries, rearranging your bookshelf, and learning a new language or two.

Staples of this aesthetic include: plaid skirts, turtle necks, sweater vests, and blazers! Accessorise with vintage or antique jewelry, glasses, scarves and ties!

Cottagecore

A sister to the Dark Academia movement, the Cottagecore aesthetic glamorises folksy, traditional dress and styles. If Little House on the Prairie was the name of a fashion line instead of a popular children’s book series, then it would accurately capture everything Cottagecore aspires to be. Light, airy clothing perfect for a day spent frolicking outside in the meadows is the name of the game for this aesthetic, and if you often find yourself daydreaming about living in a reclusive cottage away from society, then it just might be for you!

Even if you don’t live in a small cabin in the moors, there are still ways to participate in this aesthetic. Making jam, picking wildflowers, taking care of plants, any arts and crafts, and baking are all ways to get that Cottagecore vibe, as long as you do it in a white maxi dress with lace trimmings!

Live out your Cottagecore fantasy with: long swooshy skirts, collared shirts, wide-brimmed hats, lace, flowy dresses, and strappy sandals! Embrace your natural hair, paint your nails fun colors, and wear makeup that reminds you of the beauty of spring!

E-Girl & E-Boy

The early 2000’s saw a surge in emo and scene styles, and it looks to be that this generation’s equivalent is the E-Girl and E-boy aesthetics. With gothic and alternative influences, black clothing, dark makeup, and brooding facial expressions are the very root of this style. Skateboarding, learning guitar, reading poetry, collecting vinyls, and going to concerts are all activities that, when combined with fashion, would place you firmly in this aesthetic.

If you’re an emo veteran looking to live out the glory days, or simply just want people to get out of your way while walking down the street, you can do so by wearing: chains, ripped leggings or jeans, band tees, striped long sleeve shirts, fishnet tights, leather, and small pops of colour! An updated Grunge 2.0 if you like, but rather polished as opposed to dirty!

Soft Girl and Soft Boi

An aesthetic characterised by pastels and cutesy, almost child-like clothing, the Soft Girl and Soft Boi styles are for those who simply want to embrace their, well, “soft” side. If it looks a little preppy, that’s because it is, but the aesthetic markets a mindset of “sweetness, sensitivity, and innocence”. This aesthetic demands activities such as listening to indie music, falling hopelessly in love with your best friend, blowing bubbles, and roller skating at dusk.

Wear pink on more than just Wednesdays with: loose, light coloured sweaters, pastel colours, tiny hair barrettes, flower crowns, flavoured lip gloss, and round glasses!

Royalcore

Royalcore is one of the newer aesthetics, but is quickly gaining in popularity among Tik Tok fashionistas. As the name suggests, it is a style resembling the type of clothing you would see in a royal court. Of all the aesthetics, this one is sure to cause a hit to your wallet, but nevertheless, is worth mentioning due to its extravagance alone. Royalcore’s goal is to make people feel powerful, strong, and in control of their life, just like a monarch would! You rule, babe.

Here’s a few activities you can do to feel a bit more regal: learn how to ball dance, host a dinner party, get your nails done, take a luxurious bath, use lace for napkins and listen to classical music!

Live like royalty with: large poofy ball gowns, ornate gold jewellery, vibrant eyeshadow, a bold lipstick, pearls, fabrics such as velvet, lace or satin, and of course, a tiara!

With Tik Tok more popular than ever before, there is no doubt that it will continue to have a large impact in what people wear and do, especially the younger generation. The fashion world is ever changing, and time will only tell what new and exciting influences will be created! Every generation has their own personal Tik Toks, we remember when back in decades Tumblr was flooded with inspiring communities and visuals too, and established a generation of creatives.

Whether you have been inspired to change up the way you look, or constantly searching for a new style to spice up your wardrobe, always look up to the young. They always know something next!
