Planning your meals out for the week is easier said than done. Picking the right food and right portions can be mind boggling with the information overload nowadays.

Let’s take a trip back to simpler times.

I believe nutrition was never meant to be complicated. In fact, it really is quite simple once you block out all the fluff around you. Think back to the story of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. How simple life must have been with no fast food, deep fryers, microwaves, ovens, or refrigerators. They had their essentials provided for. Our world has advanced in many ways for the better, but basic nutrition has seemed to have gone backwards. Let’s get back to the basics.

Planning Your Meals

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. When you plan out your meals for what you need, you are more likely to follow through and make great choices. If you fly by the seat of your pants, I can almost guarantee you will make a bad decision. Even the most discipline people will fail without a plan.

The easiest way I’ve learned to plan my meals out is taking it week by week. Especially since you should have food that is perishable. In our Elite Training Academy we use this template to plan out our meals for every day of the week. We include the 3 meals a day, plus snacks in between for people that need a higher calorie intake.

Picking the Right Food

In order to fuel our bodies correctly, we need to make sure we are getting the right foods in our bodies. Once again, think simple. When getting three meals a day, it’s important that those three meals contain four specific things to optimize nutrition.

  1. Protein
  2. Vegetables
  3. Healthy Carbohydrate
  4. Healthy Fat

Now some particular foods cover more than one thing, so be aware of that as you make your selections. Nothing is ever perfect, but getting back to the way we were intended to eat will be as close to perfect as you can get.

Here is a list I have posted in a previous blog that outlines simple easy choices that can take your nutrition to the next level. Building your meals around these choices is a great step in the right direction.

Picking Portions

For my busy people who don’t want to take the time to track calories and macros, here is the easiest way Precision Nutrition recommends portioning out your meals.

Obviously, for your goals, adjust accordingly. You can also refer to our Performance Course YouTube page videos on body composition development.

There you have it: three simple ways to nail down a plan for your nutrition goals. Continue to do your research on what is best for you, as there is no perfect plan for all. Everyone is different, which is why a lot of people get lost. Keep it simple and attack!
