In the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, it’s easy to find ourselves swept away by the whirlwind of tasks, responsibilities, and distractions. Amidst this chaos, routines stand as a guiding pathway, offering stability, efficiency, and a sense of control. From managing daily chores to achieving long-term goals, routines play a pivotal role in shaping our lives for the better.

Structure and Stability

At its core, a routine is a set sequence of actions performed consistently. Routine provides structure to our days, ensuring that essential activities like waking up, eating, exercising, and working are given dedicated time slots.

This structure fosters a sense of stability, reducing the stress and anxiety that uncertainty can bring. When we know what to expect from our day, we’re better equipped to handle unexpected challenges, as our routines serve as a comforting anchor.

At Performance Course we have a saying, “Consistency is the mark of a CHAMPION.” Below is a short video of our guy, Tyler Floyd talking about consistency in one of our character talks. As stated above you can’t have a routine without consistency.

Efficiency and Productivity

Routines are often associated with increased efficiency and productivity. When tasks become habitual, they require less mental effort, allowing us to devote our cognitive resources to more demanding activities.

For instance, consider a morning routine: By following a predetermined sequence of actions, like brushing teeth, showering, and dressing, we eliminate the need to make countless decisions right after waking up. This conserves our mental energy for tasks that truly require creativity and problem-solving.

Formation of Good Habits

Routines are a powerful tool for habit formation. Whether it’s committing to a daily workout, reading a chapter of a book, or praying, integrating positive behaviors into our routines makes them more likely to stick. As we perform these actions consistently, they become ingrained in our lifestyles, leading to lasting improvements in our well-being.

Achievement of Goals

Routines are not just about day-to-day activities, they can also propel us toward our long-term goals. Breaking down larger objectives into smaller, manageable steps and incorporating them into our routines ensures consistent progress. Whether you’re striving to start on varsity, learn a new skill, or work on personal growth, routines provide a roadmap that keeps you on track. At Performance Course, we teach our athletes S.M.A.R.T. goal setting to help with accountability and timing.

Mindful Living

While routines offer structure, they don’t have to be rigid. As the world has started to change, you hear a lot about “going with the flow.” In a world with a lot of uncontrollables, I love that. But if you don’t have some sort of structure you’re setting yourself up for failure.

A lot of routines are made up of who you are and where you are trying to go. Embracing flexibility within your routines allows room for spontaneity and adaptation. This mindful approach to routines means being attuned to your needs and adjusting your schedule accordingly. It’s about finding the balance between discipline and self-care, ensuring that your routines enhance rather than hinder your quality of life.

Enhanced Mental Well-being

The predictability and organization that routines bring can profoundly impact mental well-being. This is ESPECIALLY true for you hardworking parents out there establishing routines for yourselves and your children. As a future father, I am already working to create the routines my children will follow.

Routines alleviate decision fatigue and help reduce stress levels. Moreover, the accomplishments and progress achieved through routines contribute to a sense of accomplishment and self-efficacy, fostering a positive mindset. The more small goals you accomplish over time, the more attainable those long-term goals will seem.

3 Tips To Establish Routine

  1. Use some type of calendar (I use Google Calendar) and time block every single thing you want in your routine. For example, every week of my calendar, I prioritize spiritual life, sleep, exercise, nutrition, relationships, and career. I get notifications every time something is coming up. It is almost impossible for me to miss something in my routine because of my calendar.
  2. Do it even when you don’t feel like it. I promise you won’t always feel like it. It doesn’t matter how you feel, it only matters what you do. Yes, certain circumstances knock us off a routine, but return to it as soon as possible for all the benefits it adds to your life.
  3. Know WHY you are doing it. Within all the things I prioritize, I know exactly why I am creating a routine for them. The WHY is an incredibly more powerful motivator than the WHAT. I always tell my athletes that when things get tough, you have to remember why you’re doing it.

Routines serve as a lighthouse guiding us toward calmer waters in a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming. They offer the gifts of structure, efficiency, habit formation, goal achievement, and improved well-being.

Embracing routines doesn’t mean sacrificing spontaneity or creativity. Instead, it empowers us to make the most of our time and energy. Whether you’re a busy athlete, a parent, or someone seeking to live a more intentional life, incorporating routines can be a transformative step toward a more fulfilling and balanced existence.

So, why not start today?

Craft your own routines based on your goals and experience the profound impact they can have on every aspect of your life.
