Why working out IS the answer

If you’re like me, hitting the gym while menstruating does not sound like a good idea. However, according to Dr. Stacy Sims, author of Roar: How to Match Your Food and Fitness to Your Unique Female Physiology for Optimum Performance, Great Health, and a Strong, Lean Body for Life, being regularly (physically) active can contribute to less cramping and a lighter flow. And yes, when she says regularly, that means those days when you’re on your period too.

Not only does regularly exercising improve your quality of period-life, but exercising on your period also has its benefits. The most obvious point would be that exercising leads to the release of endorphins- the feel good chemical in your brain. While this won’t cure your flow-related symptoms, it can put you in a better mood.

Plus, who says you have to go to that intense spin class? It’s a great time to check out that yoga class you’ve been thinking about. No, not the sweltering hot yoga class… keep it simple! Some studies show that yoga can help boost energy, alleviate cramps, and relieve bloating. Don’t have a gym membership or the funds to pay-per-yoga? There are plenty of period-friendly videos on Youtube for you to follow in the comfort of your own home.
