There are plenty of advantages of living in a democracy such as safety, solidarity, or the end of suppression. But the most obvious one is being able to stand up for yourself and your beliefs. We are all human beings who are capable of using our own mind and I don’t think anyone would want to give this up. Given this assumption, it seems strange that many in our modern society do not use their right to vote. Our freedom to participate in politics had not come easily. Our ancestors had to fight for the right to vote , women especially. And in many parts of the world, people continue die for speaking up for equality and justice.

Our life is directly connected to our political environment so why do a huge number of citizens not vote? In fact, statistics show a decreasing trend among the voter turnout over the years.

This can be a consequence of discord between citizens and parties or simply the indifference that many individuals feel towards political decisions. The problem is that this act of rebellion, if you want to call it that, does not count in our systems. By not voting you cannot change anything you dislike about the government. Not voting only gives those who you disapprove of, more power.

You must have opinions on topics like healthcare, immigration, terrorism, equality, and education because they affect our lives so deeply.

Do you want to receive proper treatment in case of a severe sickness? Sure, everyone does. So why play into the hands of those who do not support it? Do you want your family to stay together? Certainly, who would not. So why not use your voice in the favor of other families who have been torn apart by poor governmental choices?

People did not risk their lives for nothing. They fought for democracy, for popular sovereignty, because it shall provide cohesion, fairness, and peace. For others, yourself, and the world you live in. Do not let laziness interfere with that. In order to gain freedom, we must get involved. It costs nothing but half an hour to go to the election office. Losing your voice is a higher price to pay.
