Hitch Sixteen Years Later: Crossing Boundaries In The Hopes Of Earning Love
“The road to true love never runs smooth,” as Shakespeare put it once. Romantic comedies are no different. Some from sixteen years ago are practically from a different era, and they show it in how they handle romantic boundaries.
Will Smith is a great actor, and very versatile. He did a great job in the movie Hitch, about a “Date Doctor” that tries to help others find true love after they prove they deserve it. There are really funny moments, and Will works to create a memorable role. The film just gets more dated with time.
The Movie Basics
Will Smith plays “Hitch,” a coach who encourages nice guys to gain the courage and speak to the women they love, to build relationships. Things go awry when he falls for a tabloid journalist, one who exists to destroy others for the sake of a story. She has no compunctions unless someone tells her she’s wrong.
Hitch has standards: he makes it clear that the guy has to be nice and treat other women with respect, building a relationship for the long term. If someone just wants to get into a lady’s pants, he will walk away. When a sleazy prospect says no and grabs him, Hitch shows his prowess with martial arts.
