What I love about The Owl House is that it plays with our expectations every time. We are always surprised by what happens, that every magical trope gets played with while showing love for the stories we had. This time we get the magical school, and why Luz can’t just audit some classes to get her proper spellwork education.

“Unconventional lessons” are the theme of this episode of the Owl House. Luz tries her hand at — gasp — attending school, and she finds out why humans and magic don’t mix generally. Eda gets a hard lesson of her own — about being responsible for your charge. You can’t ignore the grunt work, no matter what.

I Was A Teenage Abomination

Luz gets grossed out when Eda robs a giant worm’s carcass for human junk; she decides to make an excuse and leave to attend the local magical school. Since she’s definitely human, however, Luz can’t just show up at the office and ask to enroll. She instead allies with a witch named Willow and helps her with a class assignment about abominations in exchange for attending her courses. Of course, it backfires when rival witch Amity rightly suspects Willow of cheating, and the teachers want to dissect Luz to prove it. Luz is busted, banned from the school, and can’t learn magic the traditional way. Meanwhile, King tries to raise a garbage worm to prove to Eda that he can teach, and…
