Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been seriously discussed by economists as a solution to poverty, the depletion of the “non-skilled” labor market, and a replacement for bloated welfare systems, but most of the discussion has taken place assuming that UBI will be administered by a centralized authority. I figured this myself until a few days ago when I heard about Circles, a decentralized project attempting to create a UBI with a cryptocurrency.
I did a bit of research and here’s a list of cryptocurrency projects currently experimenting with UBI.
1. Circles
Circles has been discussed in detail since 2015 on wordpress, medium, and its own website, and they seem to have had some local successes in Europe but there doesn’t seem to be any cohesive plan for a release, although it is slated to be on the Ethereum blockchain.
2. Grantcoin
Grantcoin is the only coin on this list to be featured on coinmarketcap and they have a beautiful website to back it up. Their wallet system is especially interesting; it interacts with your twitter account so you can just make deposits and withdrawls from there. It seems like they distribute coins quarterly but as of this writing there’s no information about how to get in on the next distribution. If you only check out one of these, I would recommend Grantcoin.
3. Duniter
Duniter launched on March 8, 2017 and there does seem to be a wallet and a small, dedicated community but not a whole lot of user-friendly information or flash about the website.
