How I Mastered Saying Yes

Opportunities come around in life that we initially want to say no to. Similar to the saying, the hardest part is getting started, the idea of getting started on said opportunity might be scary. This causes us to say no when we shouldn’t. If we were able to see how said opportunity ended, we might’ve said yes. But we let fear take over.

How saying no too much made high school miserable

In high school, I had a lot of friends from elementary and I was relatively liked. Having brothers at home teaches you how to not be annoying. I gave into fear way too much when it came to extracurriculars. Throughout high school, I had the urge to join the football team, basketball team, chess club, theater, cross country, and a couple of others. But besides cross country, I never ended up doing these extracurriculars because I feared what my friends would think as well as being afraid that I might fail and face shame. In conclusion, my social anxiety and other fears held me back a lot.

This caused my fears to linger since I was never facing them directly. By the time I got over my social anxiety, COVID hit and classes went online for my last year. I’ve lost my chance to grow.

How the repercussions of saying no too much affected me through college

I was closed off to the people around me

Could have been partially due to covid but I was very closed off to the people around me. I was different than most of the people in my class, but I chose to let that completely stop me from interacting with my other classmates, besides the 1 or 2 people I got notes from.

On the outside, nobody could tell I was someone who was full of so much fear. I had a good college job, I attended every class, and I had lots of diverse friend groups where I was well-liked. But I wasn’t very healthy, besides the things I had to do I was not ambitious at all, and I was in a college program for a job I didn’t want. I was doing nothing about this problem because I was consumed with fear thanks to having such little experience with facing my fears.

The present

A year and a half passed when I dropped out of college. From the day I dropped out until now, I dove into content creation, entrepreneurship, real estate, entrepreneurship again and sales. During that time period, I slowly learned how to say yes to opportunities. When I was given the opportunity to sell insurance for a high-profile company, I finally learned from my past of saying no to everything out of fear, and I said yes, despite being afraid.

The truth is, the fear never really goes away. If an opportunity comes across you and you feel like saying no (using basic logic of course) consider it. Don’t say no immediately like I did.
