MINIMALISM: A LEVER TO AN EARLIER FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE.

“Detachment is not that you should own nothing, but that nothing should own you.” — Ali Ibn Abi Talib

For me, minimalism is focusing on the things that REALLY matter. When wanting to buy something new, answer this question and please be completely honest to yourself: ¿Do I really need this? I’m not saying that you should be stingy with yourself and with others, it’s important to enjoy life, but from a balanced perspective. The key is to understand that you shouldn’t be “consumed by consumption”, as is most of the humanity today.

Consumption is, basically, always wanting more and better things, a good example is wanting that last trendy object that the market has to offer. Reality is that the market will always go faster with its offerings than you can buy them, do not try to reach it or sooner or later you will be in a financial position in which nobody desires to be.

¿Have you ever thought that frequently material objects last for a very long time? ¿Then why you want to change your cell phone and your closet every year (if you are this type of person)? The constant desire for more is futile, it’s something that society has taught us, and we’ve never reflected on the damage it does to our personal finances.

The idea I want to share with you is that moving towards a more minimalistic lifestyle can be the catalyst to creating the financial independence that frankly all of us, especially millennials, want.

Now ask yourself this question: ¿in today’s economy (to live a comfortable, free, fulfilling and peaceful life), what does really matter? I bet that money is tied to your answer. I’m sure that in your list there are items like having a place to live and being able to eat and to be healthy. The reality is that all those items cost money.

Another incredible characteristic about our financial system is that, if you are a person with a decent wage, the odds that you have a good credit score are very high, which gives you the illusion that you can spend in costly, almost certainly, meaningless items. The problem is that, when its already late, you realize that you are drowned in debt and that a huge part of your income is already compromised on paying the fees of items that aren’t trendy and desirable anymore. That is called financial slavery and it’s the state in which a lot of people live, worldwide.

One of many important things my father taught me was to live below my means. The odds that you’re spending way more than your income are very high. The challenge here is in your mindset. If you want to improve your financial status, make a commitment with yourself that you will learn what is wrong about your mindset about money and how it is taking you away from what you really want for your life. Do not get confused with the things that society has made you believe you want, find your own path.

If you want to take something from these words, please take this: in the end, money is just a tool, one that you can use as you want, you can do good or bad things with it. You always can use it wisely to achieve meaningful and fulfilling goals, not those that are silly and superficial. I invite you to build a purposeful life (which undoubtedly is linked to your goals about money and what you want to use it for).

Please do not get me wrong: I have nothing against driving a supercar, having a mansion or buying costly-luxury items, but don’t go poor trying to look rich and trying to impress people who really do not care. Focus on what’s REALLY important to you. Let’s be honest, if you certainly need a vehicle (I doubt it), do you need the 2019 luxury one? the answer will be always no, a mid-range vehicle gives you the same service and more purchasing power for transcendent things.

With love and passion for helping you grow,

Daniel.
