How Procrastination Almost Killed My Dream Life (And How It Might Kill Yours)
Procrastination is the nr. 1 killer of your dreams, goals and potential success. It’s a strong force that has taken many people’s ambitions to the grave. If you procrastinate too often, the vision you have for your life will NOT come true.
I came to this powerful realization a while ago. Ever since I stepped into the world of self-development, I’ve been setting goals for myself. It started with health goals such as gaining more muscle mass, or financial goals such as saving an X amount of money — and I never really had problems achieving those goals. However, as soon as my goals shifted from health to business — I started to run into resistance.
My Dream Life
I always wanted to build a life for myself where I would earn money on the go. The freedom, the autonomy, the passive income and the ability to become a ‘digital nomad’ appealed a lot to me. I’ve never really been happy at any 9–5 job. I had a few, even at very cool companies, but I never seemed to be fully motivated, dedicated or fulfilled — no matter what I tried. I simply knew the 9–5 life wasn’t for me, so I really had no other option than to become an entrepreneur.
So, I decided to give it a go. I started an online financial education business which helped people learn how to invest their money in the stock market (which has been my background for years). I dreamed about how much money I was going to make, what cars I’d be driving and what exotic countries I’d visit. I dreamed and dreamed and dreamed. I could picture my success very clearly.
But at the same time, this was when I was experiencing the heaviest degrees of procrastination. As I was working for myself, I had no boss or ‘real’ deadlines forcing me to work. I was completely in charge. Of course, this is an awesome feeling, but it’s also a very unfamiliar feeling. An unfamiliar feeling that was sometimes hard to handle.
Procrastination Was Holding Me Back
I had trouble getting things done and getting the results I was after. I had trouble crushing everything that was on my to-do list. I had trouble working on the things that I knew I should be doing in order to get the results I want. I procrastinated often, for reasons I couldn’t explain. Sometimes I just didn’t feel like it. I didn’t have the motivation or the energy to do it. I wondered if I was just lazy.. But I know that I’ve never really been lazy, so that was unlikely. It was confusing, conflicting, frustrating.
It wasn’t like I did nothing at all.. In fact, I worked almost every single day. But it was of low intensity. I wasn’t getting that much done in a given day. I simply procrastinated too often and wasted too much time. Yet, at the same time, I was still fantasizing about how awesome my life would be like somewhere in the future — when I’d crush all my goals.
But, as the months passed, I didn’t earn a single dollar with my new ‘business’. Nothing. This would go on for 1.5 (!) years. It was very demotivating, to say the least. Many times I thought about giving up. I knew something had to change. I knew I had to make changes to the way I worked. I knew I had to get my priorities straight and somehow find renewed motivation. I knew I had to shift gears and increase the speed at which I was producing content and products.
I picked up many books and programmes about productivity, motivation and procrastination. Among them were life-changers like Tony Robbins’ Ultimate Edge programme, The War of Art, Eat That Frog and Awaken The Giant Within. I started to really study it and learn as much as possible. I resolved that I would never be my own worst enemy anymore. I realized that as an entrepreneur, your business is only as good as you are — so I had to do everything I could to become the most complete person possible.
Only when I learned to overcome procrastination systematically — to remove it out of my system basically — I started to see real results. Projects that would normally take 6 months to complete were now completed in 1 month! It’s absolutely crazy how much time I wasted away procrastinating, without really being aware of it.
My business started to grow (along with my income) as I was producing new content and products at a much faster rate than before. My self-esteem and confidence grew. My motivation and energy were at a peak level. All in all, I felt great.
This is what I want for you too. I want you to get the results you’re after in life. I want you to feel amazing about yourself because you’re absolutely killing it. I want you to fulfil your true potential and create a life of freedom and abundance. But this is only possible after learning how to overcome procrastination systemically.
Remember, anyone can work when they feel like it, but those who can work even when they don’t feel like it are the ones who eventually win. But these winners use certain strategies and techniques to get there.
