Most people use manipulation to make someone else do what they want. And even though we’re all afraid of being manipulated, the truth is that we use it to our advantage.

Sometimes, we do it on purpose. Other times, it’s a subconscious human defense mechanism.

According to therapist and relationship expert Ken Page, we choose manipulation when we struggle to deal with our emotions maturely.

But what’s even worse is that we often manipulate ourselves without being aware of it. While we manipulate others to get what we want, manipulating ourselves does the contrary because it holds us back from achieving our goals.

You cut your expectations

Did you ever realize that young people tend to have way higher expectations than grown-ups?

Teenage girls, for instance, are dreaming of prince charming, who’s smart, good-looking, and caring.

But over time, they get disappointed and lower their expectations.

This happens in almost all areas of our lives: We aim for that perfect job in a meaningful company but end up saying yes to a boring position in a corporation that’s destroying the planet.
