What comes to mind when you hear the words “smart” and “thinking”? Do you envision a small, bespectacled person with a propensity for solving riddles and speaking in anagrams?

Or is the image of some sort of genius-savant: a brilliant yet socially awkward savant who can effortlessly process information and recall facts at lightning speed?

Perhaps it evokes memories of high school SAT vocabulary words: Are you thinking brilliant, intelligent, astute, perceptive?

And if we’re being honest, isn’t smart thinking often viewed as something that just some people have and others don’t.

You know: those lucky few are born with innate intelligence and destined for greatness. Those who are blessed with inherent smartness. Those who get it…whereas the rest of us just don’t get it.

Well.

It turns out smart thinking is a skill. It’s not reserved for the lucky few. Instead of thinking of it as something you either have or don’t, think of it as a skill that can be developed. You can improve how you think. You can become an intelligent thinker over time.
