The 5 Most Important Things for Any Man to Learn

(Although I generally tend to steer away from “most important” things, I put this answer up on Quora and had a lot of positive feedback.

Here are the 5 most important things for any man to learn:)

1. GO SLOW

What if you were told you could never have sex again?

What if you had to move back in with your parents?

What if your income was cut in half?

Funny thing is you once lived with no sex, no freedom, no income and you were happy as a clam because you didn’t know better. But now that you have it, it’s tough to go back.

The temptation when you start making a little money is to gorge — more clothes, bettercar, bigger house, fancier restaurants.

The more you fall in love with a lifestyle, the more difficult it is to let those things go when life events happen.

And events happen.

2. DON’T DO THINGS WHEN EVERYONE ELSE DOES THEM

Including:

  • Driving to/from work
  • Shopping (never near Christmas)
  • Eating out (take lunch and dinner an hour late or early)
  • Filing your taxes (do it earlier)
  • Going on vacation (do it later)
  • Buying new stuff (see #2)
  • Spending money (pocket pay checks, spend later — don’t be having to “wait until Friday”)
  • Drinking (alcohol late = the quickest way to a beer gut)

3. AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP IS IMPORTANT

Despite what you see on television shows, most successful men are not also playboys. The strength and security you get from a trustworthy, loyal, encouraging partner are indescribable.

Whenever you aren’t worried about what other people think of you, it’s much easier to go forward unashamedly.

4. REALIZE NOBODY FEELS LIKE AN ADULT

You think when you grow up all the pieces are going to slide in to place, that the mysteries of the universe will unravel, that your fears and insecurities and issues will suddenly clear up.

None of that happens.

Will it ever happen? I don’t know. Does my 89-year-old grandmother feel like an adult? I don’t know. Maybe. But does she have her demons just like the rest of us?

You bet.

(P.S. Not growing up is also part of The Creative’s Curse)

5. YOUR IMPACT AS ONE PERSON GOES FURTHER THAN YOU CAN KNOW

There’s this guy at work who’s a real turd. Whenever people come into contact with him, their day gets worse. He causes problems, is generally in a bad mood, and is not really all that helpful.

But I also know this other guy whose very presence radiates positivity. He is encouraging to a fault. He is immediate friends with everyone.

Both of these men touch many more people than those they come in physical contact with. Their energy — for better or worse — carries on to homes of families they’ve never met.

What if your smile changes a person’s attitude and they go home and smile at their kids or wife or mother? What if your sour remarks are worn long after your co-worker leaves the office?

How much would you give to impact 1,000s of people? Guess what? You already do. It just may not look like you think it should.

Stay focused. Stay balanced. Learn, and most importantly:

Do.
