This is not something I had expected. It was one of those very ugly surprises we all must deal with on occasion.

I live in North Carolina. If you’ve ever lived or visited here between September and November, you should be aware it can be 85 degrees one day and below freezing the next. This calls for a variety of coats and jackets. Of course, your usual forms of dress and activities can dictate how many different types of outerwear you might need.

Now that I’m retired, I generally dress casually, but I try to look nice when I go to church. Gentlemen still wear suits and ties to services, and most women wear dresses or nice pants with jackets. I am a volunteer receptionist there, so of course, I never show up in jeans and t-shirts, etc.

I’m also older so have had years to collect dress, casual coats, and jackets suitable for any occasion. Along with considering appearance, I also have jackets and coats of various thicknesses and weights. Anything from the lightest casual cloth jacket to leather and wool ones for nicer occasions and everything in between. The same goes for my coats.

Before my dog died this summer, I walked her several times each day. I always had a bag or two in one or both pockets. If one was used, I automatically…
