It does not matter what we call them, guinea pigs, cuy or cuisines but let’s face it, who has not wanted to have such a cute companion? Certainly they are fantastic pets to have as roommates. We will discover a little more deeply its history, origins and some tips that will help you.

It is about small rodents that come from the Andes and for that reason they are also called guinea pigs. In this region of South America, they are in a completely wild enviroment! and they live in rocky areas, meadows and forests. These little kids love to live in herds, so they usually live with more guinea pigs in burrows that they dig.

Originally guinea pigs were domesticated for food use, but today it is considered one of the most popular pets in Western countries after dogs, cats and fish.

Anyone who has a guinea pig will know how scary they are at first, but the more you interact with them, more confidence they gain. They are super sociable animals and they will communicate constantly with you through those characteristic chirps and purrs. In the end you will get to understand them perfectly!

Here are some tips that we can tell you from Petchain Foundation, for the perfect care of our companion:

• As mentioned above, guinea pigs are very sociable and are programmed by nature to live in herds so we recommend at least having two or more guinea pigs to make them happier.
• They are very sensitive to loud noises, avoid them as they will be easily scared and may have episodes of stress.
• The diet of our companions is herbivorous. A serving of vegetables and fresh fruit will be great!
• It is necessary to introduce foods that provide vitamin C because guinea pigs can not produce it naturally. For this reason we always recommend fresh fruit, they love it!

PETCHAIN: Nuestra pequeña amiga

Da igual como las llamemos, cobayas, conejillo de indias o cuis pero seamos realistas, ¿A quién no le han dado ganas de tener un compañero tan mono como este? Ciertamente son unas mascotas fantásticas para tenerlos como compañeros de piso. Vamos a descubrir un poco más profundamente su historia, orígenes y algunos consejos que os servirán de ayuda.

Se trata de unos pequeños roedores que provienen de los Andes por ese motivo también se llaman conejillos de indias. En esta región de Sudamérica ¡se encuentran en estado completamente salvaje! y viven en zonas rocosas, praderas y bosques. A estos chiquitines les encanta vivir en manadas, por lo que suelen vivir con más cobayas en madrigueras que ellas mismas excavan.

Originalmente las cobayas se domesticaban para su uso alimenticio, pero hoy en día es considerada una de las mascotas más populares en los países occidentales después de perros, gatos y peces.

Cualquiera que tenga una cobaya sabrá lo asustadizas que son al principio, pero cuanto más interactúas con ellas, más confianza adquieren. Son animales súper sociables y que se comunicarán constantemente con vosotros a través de esos chirridos y ronroneos tan característicos. ¡Al final conseguiréis entenderlos perfectamente!

• Son muy sensibles a los ruidos fuertes, intentar evitarlos ya que se asustan fácilmente y pueden llegar a tener episodios de estrés.
• La dieta de nuestros compañeros es herbívora. ¡Una ración de verdura y fruta fresca les sentará genial!
• Es necesario introducir alimentos que aporten vitamina C por que las cobayas no pueden producirla de forma natural. Por este motivo siempre recomendamos fruta fresca. ¡Les encanta!
