Australian Shepherds are having an overdue moment. Between TV and print, they are popping up everywhere. Easily recognizable due to their unique color patterns, expressive eyes, and typically bobbed tail, the Australian Shepherd deserves its time in the limelight. In the past, the breed was frequently underrepresented in popular media, underappreciated by the dog savvy, and undervalued as a breed capable of being a “family” dog. However, over the last few years, these pups have managed to paw their way into the hearts of people everywhere.

Our first glimpse into life with an Australian Shepherd was 15 years ago when Pam’s mom rescued a blue merle named Dee. Though neither of us had ever interacted with an Australian Shepherd before, we slowly fell in love. Despite living a neglectful and isolated life prior to her adoption, Dee proved resilient, sweet, and loving. She quickly adjusted to her new home and became a family member. She participated in our wedding as the “Dog of Honor” and frequently accompanied Pam’s parents whenever they dropped in for a visit. She was loved by all who met her until her last day on earth. Sadly, she crossed the rainbow bridge in 2021.
