A City /Country Transition

When I was in my late teens we moved from a very large city to a smaller country city. Never mind that this country city was the capital of Australia, Canberra. It was then still in the throes of growing up to be a city of consequence. In fact, Canberra is now a city of much beauty and one of Australia’s best-kept secrets, a city where planned city living makes it so easy to raise and educate your children and to just be.

When we moved from Victoria to the A.C.T. Canberra was still in its transition mode to becoming a major city so there were still many country aspects to it.

We settled easily into a beautiful house, on a hill opposite a farm but unbelievably still in the heart of the city.

The farmer ran a large mob of sheep on his land and it was Springtime. So it was with horror that one day my sister and her then-boyfriend Andrew noticed that the lamb's tails were only hanging on by a thread. Nearly off in fact. There was blood and mess. Poor little things. I was quite distraught and jumped to the conclusion that the crows had done their darndest to maim these beautiful little creatures.

What to do? The obvious solution was for us to carry out operations of a mercenary nature on these lambs and, to try to sew their tales back on. Needles and black thread were found and one by one…
