We Lost Another Dog

We grieve for our pets just as much as we do for any family members. Our pets are our constant companions, always happy to see us, never arguing or complaining, just living to love and be loved. And so, we love them. And it hurts when we lose them.

In March we found out that our beloved boxer had cancer. He held on for five weeks. We laid him to rest in April. Hercules was the protector of our home, always alert, ready to bark at any intruder on the property.

My husband and I live in the country on a large, wooded plot of land. You can walk a short distance in any direction from our house and be deep in the woods. The forest is home to many critters — deer, wild pigs, coyotes, rabbits, possums, squirrels, foxes…you name it, and it probably lives there. We love living there too.

The wild creatures of the woods rarely come close to the house. We had 3 dogs that kept them away. We lost our beautiful bloodhound in 2020 to old age. You can read all about him in this article. One month (to the day) after Duke passed, a little black lab mix came running out of the woods to take shelter from the rain on our porch. She was wet, cold, and starving. We fed and bathed her and called her Little Miss while we tried to find her home. No one claimed her, so she became ours.
