Chickens are great companion animals — they’re about as low-maintenance as cats and as goofy as golden retrievers.

Adoption is the most responsible way to add a pet chicken, or any animal to your family. Animals that are sold by hatcheries, pet stores, feed stores, breeders can be neglected and/or housed in unsafe conditions, receive inadequate veterinary care, become injured or die during shipment, or bred irresponsibly, such that they have genetic diseases and defects.

There are so many animals out there that need families. These entities hurt animals because they increase the supply of pets that already outweighs the demand.

It took me about year to find and adopt my perfect chicken companions, and I learned a lot throughout my search. Here are 5 ways to find your feathered friend.

1. Facebook groups

Making connections with people in the chicken community is the number one way to find your feathered friend.

Join your local Facebook group for chicken enthusiasts! People will post in these communities to rehome animals. Search for [your city, state, or country] backyard chickens, rehoming chickens, chicken adoption, chicken rescue, etc.
