This story begins with two friends, Kru and Madhu catching up over a video call during the lockdown.
Kru had expressed her desire to start a podcast that would focus on talking about these unattainable body standards. This desire of hers stemmed from personal experiences.
This idea of talking over the radio has always fascinated Madhu all her life, and she also had lots of personal stories that motivated her to speak up.
Thus, Kru and Madhu along with two other friends, began this platform, ‘Petromax light eh dhan venuma?’
The quirkiness of the name comes from the famous Tamil comedy that revolves around the fact that the comedian is particular about the model of the light and would not take no for an answer.
Here are 10 reasons why we exist:
1. Chennai as a city has seen lots of initiatives around different taboos through events, art, and social media. None of these focuses exclusively on documenting stories of the citizens and their experience with setting their own body standards
2. Chennai is diverse in every sense. From being the home to Tamil cinema, housing IT parks, to being a cultural hub, this city is a bustling cosmopolitan. Finding relatable stories in every industry would help in encouraging people of the city to share their stories without the fear of being judged
3. Schools in the city don’t talk about such topics extensively. We want to be the ones to begin creating that awareness at grass root levels. One of our core principles is to help children learn young about being kind to their bodies
4. Talking to people over a podcast can reduce the potential hesitation than when we were to record them over a video. The awkwardness could be a lot less because of the chosen medium while sharing their story
5. There are not a lot of mediums that make documenting stories the core idea of the platform. Instead, they resort to offering solutions or unsolicited advice. We decided from the very beginning, the biggest point of the podcast must be to listen to people sharing their stories
6. Collecting stories of a common person is what drives us. This is the reason why we exist, to find relatable stories and let others know they are not alone
7. Collaboration is one of the most important ways to solve social problems, and we believe that a topic of such magnitude brings various people from different industries together to take action. Petromax wants to facilitate such a change at a local level
8. Cause is the hero. We as podcast hosts try as little as possible to influence the topic and focus on bringing out the stories in a structured manner. Our conversation style is free flowing while having a basic framework in place.
9. Talking about something is the new normal. Creating the space to share one powerful story is enough to change the world. Imagine learning about your city through its people and their experiences. We strive to be people centric.
10. Chennai is our home. And indeed, we want the change to begin here.
