We are thrilled to announce that Phala Network has joined the Blender Developer Fund as a Cooperate Gold Member in December 2021. Joining companies including Intel, Microsoft, AWS, Nvidia, and Adobe also contributing to fund. The partnership will further engage Phala Network with blender.org’s powerful technology to provide Web3 rendering services for Metaverse worlds.

Phala Network tackles the issue of trust in the computation clouds. By organizing a decentralized network of computation nodes around the world, it offers high-performance services without relying on any cloud vendor. Phala’s workers run their programs in Secure Enclaves, a privacy technology already embedded into modern processors, which enables versatile and confidential execution. Together, Phala creates the infrastructure for a powerful, secure, and scalable trustless computing cloud.

In November 2021, Phala announced its core product — Fat Contract— a generic programming model to build decentralized services beyond the capability of smart contracts. Later in December, the Phala team finished its preliminary functionality and demonstrated them at the Substrate Seminar. As an infrastructure, Fat Contracts provide a way to decentralize backend infrastructure in the Web 3 era.

Developing a partnership with Blender opens many possibilities for Phala to offer high-performance rendering services at a lower cost. Phala is already working on a demo that runs the Blender renderer in its Secure Workers. At the same time, Phala will provide workstation-level computation power for 3D artists to build the Metaverse through the partnership.

Phala has also been developing its native Metaverse — Phala World that will use Blender’s 3D technology for maximum visual impact.

About Blender & Blender Development Fund

Blender control interface

Blender is an open-source 3D modeling platform built for content creators. It sits at the center of 3D workflows used by artists and world builders around the glove. In 2020 alone, Blender was downloaded over 14 million times. The dedicated subreddit boasts nearly 500,000 members and over 100 books focused on the tool have been published so far.

Creators use Blender to sketch, design, build, and polish virtual environments and characters across dozens of platforms, including Decentraland.

Blender is GPL licensed, ensuring that the code will remain a free, public good for all time. It protects the developer and user community from malicious patents, hostile forks, and lock-down attempts.

The Blender Development Fund was created to help provide the world with best-in-class 3D technology, with Blender at the core of its offering.

The Fund helps to provide grants and subsidies to developers and contributors working on all aspects of Blender, from one-off projects to broader initiatives put into motion by the blender.org board of administrators.

About Phala

Phala Network tackles the issue of trust in the computation cloud.

This blockchain is a trustless computation platform that enables massive cloud processing without sacrificing data confidentiality. Built around TEE-based privacy technology already embedded into modern processors, Phala Network’s distributed computing cloud is versatile and confidential. By separating the consensus mechanism from computation, Phala ensures processing power is highly scalable but not wasteful. Together, this creates the infrastructure for a powerful, secure, and scalable trustless computing cloud.

As a member parachain of the Polkadot cross-chain ecosystem, Phala will be able to provide computing power to other blockchain applications while protecting the data layer, enabling possibilities like privacy-protected DeFi trading positions and transaction history, co-computing DID confidential data, developing light-node cross-chain bridges, and more.

On-chain services currently being developed on Phala Network include Web3 Analytics: high-performance smart contracts from Phala to enable highly concurrent mass data analytics with privacy, paving the way for an alternative to Google Analytics that inherently respects individual confidentiality.
