Looking back at the growth of the internet from Web1.0 to Web2.0, we see a transition from one-way read-only activity to extensive two-way interaction. Anyone can post opinions, upload videos, and book hotels online. Exciting though this progress is, it’s moving towards enterprise opacity, data hegemony, dubious sources, and personal data leakage. In particular, privacy concerns have surged as people lose control of information about themselves — essentially losing control of their digital selves. “This is not the network we want!”
The internet has grown into an information jungle, but humans are still running naked through that jungle! Private companies compile and own information about our every move, yet that information is subject to public disclosure — for the profit of those private entities, or by accident, or even by malicious action. Unfortunately, whenever readable data exists in centralized servers, leaks can happen; even the biggest, most secure Internet giants are not immune. Enterprises shape the rules, users blindly transfer away their rights, and privacy is unwittingly bartered away.
The Antidote to Web2.0
As we enter the Web3.0 era, users hope to regain control over their own data: to control their own identity, to control their own intentions, and have real privacy, all so that the centralized structure can no longer dominate us as it does today.
Phala believes that personal data — a user’s assets and digital life — should be controlled and protected by the technology itself.
