PHILADELPHIA (June 28, 2021) — The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office today was honored to announce the awarding of $82,500 in grant money to four community-based organizations in support of violence prevention efforts. This first round of grants is awarded to the following groups: Kensington Soccer Club ($35,000); C.B. Community Schools ($27,500); The Jarell Christopher Seay Love and Laughter Foundation ($10,000); and the Potter’s House Mission ($10,000).

The Kensington Soccer Club for years has brought high quality free or pay-what-you-can soccer and youth development programming to children from low-income families. Learn more.

C.B Community Schools launched in 2015 with a mission to engage system-involved youth, including those who are or have been in contact with foster care and juvenile justice. Learn more.

The Jarell Christopher Seay Love and Laughter Foundation, named in honor of the 18-year-old son of Foundation Co-Founders Cheryl and Joel Seay, provides gun violence prevention and conflict-resolution education to Philadelphia youth, in addition to recreational and civic engagement activities. Learn more.

Potter’s House Mission provides transitional housing for houseless women and children throughout Philadelphia. They also offer a wide range of programming including health education, therapeutic counseling, and interpersonal skills building workshops, among other services. Learn more.

These groups help prevent violence in communities across the city by collectively ensuring that our youth are engaged in productive activities, are self-empowered to become leaders for their community, and provide the mentoring and educational supports necessary to help them flourish as they grow into adulthood.

This grant funding, derived from the lawful and appropriate use of civil asset forfeiture, will be distributed and audited by the Philadelphia Foundation. The DAO anticipates announcing the next round of awards in 30 to 60 days. Groups interested in applying for future violence prevention funding are strongly encouraged to contact the Philadelphia Foundation at GrantmakingServices@philafound.org.

“Summer is here, and with it, the predicted national and local surge in tragic gun violence,” said DA Krasner. “I’m thrilled that the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office is able to provide critically important funding for these grassroots organizations doing the important work of violence prevention. But we must also all work together to make sure that the level of support is even more robust so that we can save more lives going forward. That’s why I continue to urge our corporate and nonprofit sectors to step up and match the $100 million violence prevention goal the DAO and our community and elected partners have set. We need our non-profits to bring $100 million to the table. We need our wealthy corporations to bring another $100 million to the table. That is how the work gets done.”
