PHILADELPHIA (March 9, 2021) — The District Attorney’s Office (DAO) on Tuesday announced that federal habeas litigator Matthew Stiegler has been appointed Supervisor of the District Attorney’s Office Federal Litigation Unit. The Federal Litigation Unit is one of the four units in the DAO Law Division.
Law Division Supervisor Nancy Winkelman said, “Matt is a highly experienced, nationally renowned federal habeas practitioner, who will be a tremendous asset to the important work of the District Attorney’s Office and of the Law Division. The DAO’s ability to attract people of Matt’s caliber is a testament to the outstanding work we are doing.”
Stiegler received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Phi Beta Kappa, and his J.D. from the University of North Carolina Law School with highest honors. He was a law clerk for the Honorable David Ebel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Stiegler has had a sole practice since 2009, specializing in federal appellate habeas litigation in the Third Circuit, and has taught Appellate Advocacy at Penn Law.
“I am thrilled to be joining such an incredibly talented team of attorneys working under District Attorney Larry Krasner,” Stiegler said. “The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office is a national model for progressive prosecution. I look forward to helping build a criminal legal system that is truly fair and just moving forward, and willing to account for errors of the past.”
