Assistant District Attorney Alex Blumenthal of the DAO Elder Justice Unit joined State Senator Sharif Street’s “SCAM Jam” virtual event to help educate consumers about COVID-19 frauds this week. Participating constituents learned how to protect themselves and their loved ones against coronavirus-related scams targeting seniors and vulnerable communities.

The forum provided important tips and tools for recognizing scam calls about COVID-19 stimulus checks, price gouging, and addressed concerns about completing the 2020 Census.

Here are some tips from the forum:
 * If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
 * Watch for red flags when the scammer says that the information they are providing is guaranteed or a secret.
 * Order online from reputable sites.
 * Shop smart, only buy what is needed, and minimize the times people leave their home.
 * Protect passwords and personal information.
 * Watch for price increases on masks, sanitizers, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies.

State Rep. Danilo Burgos and representatives from the PA Attorney General’s Office and the PA Department of Banking and Securities also participated.

ADA Blumenthal focused his presentation on 2020 Census scams. He reminded participants that the census will not send you unsolicited emails, charge a fee, or ask political questions. He also explained how the census process works and that if a household is approached by an official 2020 Census worker, they will have identification and branded census materials. If someone has questions about the 2020 Census or COVID-19 scams, they can contact the DAO Economic Crimes Unit and Elder Justice Unit at 215–686–9902 or email Fraudcomplaint@phila.gov.
