Today, we’re happy to announce that design assets on Phi are now available under CC0, the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) public license.

The web3 community’s philosophy of adopting open-source licenses as part of its core is key to promoting collaboration and derivative works. We would like to recognize this philosophy and grow the number of CC0 projects and works out there. We look forward to joining this community and hope our IPs will also be globally adopted.

Special thanks to all of our pixel artists, eBoy, ta2nb, and Fuzuki for agreeing and sharing our vision.

What kind of designs in Phi is CC0?

Our design assets, specifically Baseplates, Wallpapers, Objects, Phi Logo, and Dotty (Phi’s Mascot) are now available under CC0.

We have prepared a repository on GitHub for all Phi’s CC0 design assets to be available for download. (This repository is the specific scope of CC0.) We are planning to release future designs under the CC0 license, please refer to the GitHub repo for specificity.

Note that there are certain designs that may contain copyrighted logos or designs from other protocols, and should be used in accordance with their respective guidelines.

What’s CC0?

Many good reads are provided by Sensei of CC0 IPs.

CC0 enables scientists, educators, artists and other creators and owners of copyright- or database-protected content to waive those interests in their works and thereby place them as completely as possible in the public domain, so that others may freely build upon, enhance and reuse the works for any purposes without restriction under copyright or database law.

The pros are

  • Decentralizes distribution and significance. Derivatives created without permission. Every derivative work increases the attention and mindshare of the original.
  • Aligns interests. Creators can make self-sustainable derivatives. They are incentivized to create more (hopefully, higher quality) derivatives.
  • Simplifies things. No more worrying about rights, or answering questions about what is and isn’t okay. Everything is spelled out and easy to understand. We can focus on our work and we can be surprised by what the community does.
  • Crypto-Native. It’s more aligned with the philosophy of Web3.

CC0 allows you to create any derivatives without any permission, and we believe that encourages composable IP culture for NFT space.

What can you do with our artwork?

Now, Phi’s artworks are in all of your hands. Everyone is allowed to use them for derivatives, games, mangas, animes, or any other creations. Many NFT IPs have become CC0, but we haven’t seen world/field theme IPs so far. Imagine that lots of NFT characters act in the world of Phi. Phi will provide lots of world patterns for NFT space.

Guidelines

All isometric pixel artworks in Phi have the guideline as the background which is called “Tilix”. That was created by eBoy, and please refer to this for your creations. Tilix is a system that applies to the entire eBoy’s isometric pixel art, not just Phi. Therefore, it should be noted that Tilix itself is not included in this CC0 announcement.

What do we believe?

Our purpose is to build a decentralized, open-source space. Create a base block for builders and influence creators. We can’t draw the line of imagination for something intended to be about individuality, self-expression, and identity creation. We never set a limit on how many phi lands could be created by individual ens domains, we believe object and quest creation should be the same. Like a GitHub for artists, architects, and writers of web3. Our resonation with the idea of free internet and web3 mindset will be higher.

Letting builders build is how the internet and this scene have always evolved. Based on this strategy, we have seen some of the greatest projects like Loot or Nouns DAO building the biggest communities of builders, artists, and tech lovers. Communities are building and doing great things collaboratively. Nouns DAO was the biggest matching partner in Gitcoin’s GR12, with a 169 ETH contribution passed through a proposal last December. We are wondrous of creators’ ideas and how they could shape the future of Phi.

We believe that making Phi’s design assets public domain will strengthen our brand. The project will increase more quickly, gaining cultural credibility with every new reference created.

Are you interested in creating derivative works of Phi? We’d love to see your full creativity!

After you created any work, please submit it below. (Of course, you can also post it on Twitter or Discord.)
