We had another amazing PhoneGap Day in Amsterdam last May. The PhoneGap team and 200+ attendees all gathered to celebrate PhoneGap, web and mobile development. The event was hosted at the Het Compagnietheater right in the heart of Amsterdam (one of our top favorite venues). Big thanks to the Web Conferences Amsterdam team that helps us pull off successful events year after year.

Our speakers came from all over the world to talk about the latest frameworks, performance hacks, testing, WebVR and augmented reality. This year’s lineup was IMPRESSIVE so big thanks to our speakers for putting in so much time and effort into their presentations. We were also joined by our amazing sponsors: Monaca, Ionic and Wikitude.

Oh and we had brand new swag this year! For the first time we brought PhoneGap cardboard VR viewers which came in quite handy for our WebVR workshop.

Highlights

Talks/workshops

We had an amazing lineup of speakers for the conference and workshop day. All videos from PhoneGap Day EU 2017 can be found here.

The incredible Kerri Shotts spoke about Modern JavaScript and PhoneGap and showed us how to build a workflow that integrates modern JavaScript and PhoneGap together. Joe Bowser (co-creator of PhoneGap who originally wrote the Android implementation) joined us at PhoneGap Day EU for the first time to talk about Getting Started with WebVR and the basics of AFrame. Timo Ernst spoke about Building PhoneGap apps with Vue.js and Framework7 and he also vlogged his PGDay EU experience here and here. It’s a fun look behind the scenes at the day-to-day for PhoneGap Day speakers and prep so check it out!

We were so lucky to have Max Lynch from Ionic join us to talk about Performance Hacks. He gave us practical techniques to achieve that native performance that we want and our users expect both in our mobile apps with PhoneGap/Cordova and also techniques we can use in web apps and progressive web apps.

Another PhoneGap OG, Jesse MacFadyen, gave us an awesome look into what you can do with sound in PhoneGap with Music Exploration in PhoneGap. He took us through what you can accomplish with sound in apps from music to noise. How to build a metronome, where timing is crucial. How to build an instrument, where pitch is critical. How to combine the 2 to make a sequencer. And what it takes to make a PhoneGap synthesizer.

Diversity scholarships

For the first time ever we were able to provide diversity scholarships thanks to our amazing speaker and long-time friend of PhoneGap, Ryan Hanna. Ryan donated his speaker fee to give this opportunity to under-represented groups.

Join us next time!
