This week, the PhoneMe team was fortunate enough to connect with teachers and poets working in the Maple Ridge — Pitt Meadows area. During a professional development session hosted by Westview Secondary, teachers and education assistants gathered to learn about implementing spoken word poetry into their English language arts programs. Amber led a session focused on exploring key notions about what spoken word encompasses, lesson planning strategies, and sharing spoken word poetry.

The second portion of the session comprised of a PhoneMe poetry-writing workshop. Like the team did at Enver Creek in early December, Amber led the group through the steps of writing and submitting a PhoneMe poem to the map. We paused to discuss how PhoneMe could be incorporated in a number of different ways into the classroom, clarified the steps for submission, and then engaged in poetry writing. Educators agreed to play with one of our new poetry prompts, and at the end of the session, several participants shared some gorgeous poetry that they are considering submitting to our map and sharing with students as an exemplar.

Thank you to all the educators who shared their PhoneMe poems this week, and we are looking forward to hearing your recordings! Further, we are excited to hear about how their students respond to the PhoneMe Project.

As a final note, Amber would like to express many thanks for the warm welcome and lovely gifts she received for leading the PD session. She is looking forward to returning to offer further PD in April!
