How lucky are we? The PhoneMe team had the great privilege of partnering with Queen’s University to run a three workshops last week with two amazing scholars: Dr. Claire Ahn and Dr. Jane Chin. They very warmly welcomed us into their teacher education classes and allowed us to work with an amazing group of teacher candidates specializing in secondary English.

Across all the workshops, educators showed off their artistic abilities and generously shared their poetry about a range of unique places and spaces. To experience the first few pieces by Queen’s students, be sure to head over to out map and look for the following poems:

  • “Bittersweet memories” by Jaclyn
  • “Circles” by Cory MacRae
  • “Unmappable” by Madison C.
  • “Homegrown” by Jaspar Wong
  • “Self-Portrait” by Becca Lo
  • “#kwaawesome” by Ryan Coulter

… and more will be added to the map very shortly! Be sure to head back soon! We were floored by their poems and we hope all the poets we met will soon share their work with this project.

Throughout each session, Queen’s teacher candidates asked astute questions about how to best integrate this project into their own teaching practices, inquired about ways in which to uniquely engage adolescent student poets in this kind of creative expression, and shared ideas for embedding PhoneMe curriculum into larger cross-curricular projects. Our team certainly left inspired to continue to enhance the project so that it reflects educator wants and needs!

We are so grateful to the educators at Queen’s University for their partnership and look forward to continuing to learn and grow alongside their teachers in training! Be sure to check back for updates on our ongoing curriculum and research as we work alongside our Queen’s partners.
