Note: We made it into SXSWi 2014! You can check out a video and slideshow from the actual talk here.

One of the biggest things we’re known for at The Phuse — aside from the cool work we get to do — is being extremely enthusiastic, accessible and genuine people. Many of our clients say they don’t even notice that we’re a remote shop. We do this through our culture of over communication — cat gifs, IRC bots and custom software and all.

Given the popularity of working in distributed teams — and the lack of connectedness and fun that sometimes hinders them — we’ve proposed a presentation on creating an awesome culture in remote teams for SXSW 2014.

Questions Matt and James will be answering include:

  • How do I build a remote team? (What qualities should I look for, and what’s the best process?)
  • How do I make sure everyone — including myself — stays accountable? (In harsher words, how do I make sure everyone is actually working?)
  • What are the best tools for keeping teams connected and close? (Voice, text and video chat, document sharing, etc.)
  • What are the benefits of having a distributed team over an in-person team? (Especially when it comes to design and development projects.)
  • How can I create and maintain a positive culture with no walls? (Keeping a good attitude, encouraging transparency, etc.)

But we don’t get to present unless we make the cut. So we’d really appreciate it if you gave us a thumbs-up over at SXSW PanelPicker sometime before Friday, September 6th. If we present, we’ll be sure to share all our materials and tips here for anyone who can’t attend.

Thanks, and hope to see you at SXSW 2014!

PS: Our friends at NASA & SecondMuse have pitched a stellar session too — on global collaboration. (We worked with them on the Mission Report for the International Space Apps Challenge, as well as the report for National Day of Civic Hacking.) James is also on the roster for this panel, so if you’re so inclined, send some votes their way too!
