“Follow your passion, Create your Dreams, Do not stop till you achieve them!”-Yash Kumar Rungta (Team, robovitics)

Have you ever wondered, how machines work? How robots move, heed to commands, perform the applicable tasks, and manage to understand us so effectively? Well, it is all because of a vision that George Devol had when he created the first robot that laid the foundation of today’s modern-day devices and IoT Robotics appliances.

Today, Robotics has emerged as a huge field in terms of human advancements as robots tend to decrease human efforts while also decreasing the time required for the tasks to be completed. And all of this is achieved while maintaining almost spot-on accuracy which is almost impossible to achieve normally if we account for human error.

In this new series which we call “India Innovates”, we are planning to discuss our young innovative and brilliant minds which have been extremely active in the field of robotics and technology sciences in the form of various student chapters and clubs.

RoboVITics — VIT Vellore

A Vision: Sharing knowledge, inflicting curiosity!

The team of Piblitz.com conducted an interview with one of the team members, Yash Kumar Rungta of the club RoboVITics of VIT, Vellore. Yash explained the working of the official robotics club of the Vellore Institute of Technology, its mission, and the outstanding innovations that happen there.

They are a group of engineers with an inclination towards Robotics. They started out as a group of passionate people willing to dedicate some of their time to develop robots and increase the awareness of modern-day technology over a decade ago. Soon, this club turned out to be the official Robotics club of VIT, Vellore.

They aim to spread the knowledge of Robotics to the masses. They work on various types of projects that inculcate the sense of curiosity for robotics among individuals. Apart from that, they believe in helping the unfortunate children of our society by uplifting them and spending some time imparting quality education to them.

Innovations redefined…

The Cozmo Bot:

It is a prototype to make a human-friendly interaction robot that uses the wide field of AI and Image processing to detect, track and recognize human faces and acts accordingly if the person is recognizable in its database.

The Cheetah:

IT is a quadruped bot based on animal cheetah. A 3d printed body made of two pieces connected by a spine and a design approach quite different than the conventional animal-like robots created.

The Spider bot:

Imagine a bot that can efficiently climb walls and other terrains which are difficult to climb even for humans! Well, spider bot has its legs shaped quite a bit like the spider and the kinematics involved in its working makes it a great climber and allows it to be used in secret applications that involve spying.

The 3D-Mapping Drone:

A drone developed by the students of robovitics uses a camera to scan the surroundings. It then performs the necessary calculations using image processing and is able to accurately create a 3D model of its surrounding. It is extremely helpful in surveying and finding layouts of any indoor area.

The Self-driving car:

The self-driving car is an AI and deep learning-based project that the students of robovitics are developing, aiming to make cars automated and learn to drive by themselves without any human intervention. The inspiration for this project comes from Tesla Motors, USA.

The Connect 4 game

It is an artificially intelligent system based on the connect 4 board game popularly known in the world. It can be played as a single-player as well as with AI in order to really test your patience on trying to win it!

Events and Happenings…

RoboWars:

ROBOWARS, the flagship event of graVITas is one-of-its-kind combat robotics competition, and also one of the biggest in India and the biggest in South India. The exciting battles between the bots took place round the clock. Around 40 bots competed, in the largest and the safest arena made by the robovitics team in VIT, Vellore. The weight categories in which the teams from around the world competed was 15 kg, 30 kg, and 60 kg.

Event: Robowars

Hands-on Robotics:

This was an event attended by more than 150 participants where the students were taught the basics of robotics and certain robotics projects like a laptop controlled mobile robot, line follower bot, obstacle avoider bot. The event concluded with an exciting competition where the participants had to traverse a maze in minimum time by the bots built by them.

Machine Design:

Using the software Fusion 360 which is widely known for its ability in 3D Modelling, the students are taught how to use it, creating 2D sketches and Drawings, 3D modeling and rendering, Assembly, and motion study of a radial engine, etc. They were also taught about generative design which is a new feature in the design industry.

Cosmos 360:

It is a design Hackathon conducted for the purpose of letting student’s minds stir up their creative juices, and bring up innovative solutions to the problem statements given to them. The participants are given a duration of 24 hours to work on the problem statements. The theme was space and hence the event named Cosmos. This event also aimed to provide the participants with a wide scenario of problems to overcome and gain a great amount of knowledge in how space applicable projects are designed.

For the Society…

In their outreach program, they handle a society-welfare (social cause) event which is named Kartavya. The event “Kartavya” includes the members of robovitics visiting orphanages and meeting many little children who have a keen desire to understand how things work. Teaching and playing with them along with dedicating some time to give them quality education about robotics and machines tends to focus on the greater good for the upcoming generations of our country.

Team Robovitics fulfilling their “Kartavya”.

Indeed when you think about it, a club that fulfills all the responsibilities and technical tasks at hand and also manages to devote some time for such an appreciable social gesture of teaching the less privileged children of our society is indeed outstanding, isn’t it?
