If you’re familiar with penguin mating rituals, you may know the male penguin searches meticulously for the smoothest, most polished pebble to gift a potential mate.

Similarly, you may be familiar with the gift of a dead rodent from your dog or cat.

Thankfully, most humans have different cultural norms regarding gifts and giving.

But this has got me thinking — how many of us have had to unlearn the idea of gifts as we grow older (and wiser of course)?

How many people in your life seem to have a very different philosophy on gifting than you do?

I can name a few. And this is probably where we get the saying — it’s the thought that counts.

One of my favorite books as a child was The Sweet Smell of Christmas, a scratch-and-sniff book about a family of bears celebrating the holidays. In the book, the family experiences the gifts of Christmas: hot chocolate in a big mug, baking gingerbread cookies, and an orange placed in a hanging stocking.
