Orange Is the Color of Appetite
Come on in!
I want an orange kitchen. I’ll paint the walls and cabinets in shades of amber, burnt orange, and terracotta. I’ll accessorize with tangerine, apricot and pumpkin, and I’ll round it out with copper hardware, pots, and pans.
I see you flinching. Too much. Over the top. Too bright. Too distracting, you say. I get it. We all have different tolerance levels for color in our décor, and orange is anything but neutral. But, I’m not really a neutral person. Not in my home décor, and not in my life.
I need color; bright, popping, eye-catching, exuberant, happy colors. I need bright colors to counteract the grey Pacific Northwest skies I live under. I need happy colors when I’m feeling sad. I need vibrant colors to remind me that life should be joyful.
And if you visit me in my home, I want to give you a visual cue that you’re going to be fed.
Color psychology tells us that orange evokes feelings of comfort, warmth, and appetite. That’s exactly how I want you to feel when you visit, so not only do I want my kitchen to be orange, there’s an excellent chance I’ll be serving you at least some orange colored foods. They’re tasty, healthy, and pretty, so they show up in my recipes quite often.
