Art installation in downtown Seattle’s Westlake Park, an urban plaza. Those were statues, although I did look closely to see if they were people doing performance art. All photos by author.

Roughly 30% of Seattleites were born and raised in the state of Washington, which makes me a minority. My mother was born here, I was born here, and my kids were born here. I’ve lived in four other states, and one other country, but I always found my way back home eventually.

Road leading to Seattle’s first skyscraper, the Smith Tower. I like images of roads, with all their possibilities of taking you someplace new.
Road leading to the sports stadiums.
All roads lead to the waterfront, where the largest ferry system in the U.S. plies the waters of Puget Sound. I grew up on an island in the sound only accessible by ferry boat. Most of the boats were a little smaller way back in my day.

There’s just something about this place. The combination of sea and mountains, evergreen trees, coffee, music, whales, art, moss, and endless shades of green are rooted in my soul, like no other place on earth.

Tried to take a photo of my daughter, who beat me across the street and hid behind a pole just in time, but was struck by the very big tree. There aren’t many of them left in downtown Seattle. This was on the waterfront, with the stairs leading up to the market area.

We have our share of problems, like every other urban place, not the least of which is that I’m being priced…
