How I’m making my Academic Advisor job more enjoyable

Walking into the building — first day on the job. All photos property of author.

Every once in a while, I add up my time spent in the office. For 30, 40, maybe 50 years of our life, the majority of our time is spent working. How depressing.

I’m an academic advisor at a community college. Two months ago, I made the move to a different college.

It feels unnatural to be in a massive brick building, 40 minutes from home, closer to the city than I’d like, sometimes from sunrise until sunset, for three full days each week.

The remaining two workdays, I telework from home.

When I take myself down the woe-is-me rabbit hole, my brain tries to compromise with itself.

Before the pandemic, you were in the office FIVE days a week!

At least you work with friends.

I’m glad I don’t dread going to work like ___ and ___.

It’s not that common to feel purpose with work, you’re making a difference in someone's life. You’re lucky!

It helps to have optimism.

But other times, I can’t ignore the statistics of how often I’m restricted to “The Man’s” inflexible timeline. All for an arbitrary 40 hours…
