Butterfly Rainforest, University of Florida, Gainesville — All photos by JoAnn Ryan

Approaching heaven much? I ponder this question while sitting amongst a thicket of lush ferns, palms and other tropical foliage. Splashes of colors from a variety of flora, including bromeliads and orchids, catch my eye and hold my gaze — shades of yellow, orange, pink, blue and purple.

Butterfly wings flitter and glitter all around, cutting in and cutting out, zipping and zooming all over the place — some as quick as lightening and seemingly as light and as delicate as feathers with their tiny legs and antennae.

The butterfly rainforest

I attempt to get photos but since this can be difficult, I just as often put my phone down, sit quietly on one of the benches and simply enjoy being in the moment without having to do anything else. In those fleeting minutes I can pretend I haven’t a care in the world and that nothing exists outside of this sphere — no worries about the people I love, various aches and pains in my body or bills I need to pay. Just sit and absorb.
