Almost two weeks ago we started the validation program at UtrechtInc — one of the best university-based incubators in the world.

What is an incubator and what’s the value of it?

An incubator is an organization or program that is designed to help startups succeed. This might include low-cost workspace, mentorship, expertise, access to investors, and in some cases, working capital. In addition, you’ll normally work around other similar startups. In our case, tech startups.

What was the process like to get into UtrechtInc?

We have been looking at UtrechtInc for some time because of its great reputation and focus on technology startups. Two months ago we went to an open day, which was a great way to get a better feeling of what it’s like at UtrechtInc. We directly felt the startup atmosphere and openness of the people working there. Shortly after we decided to apply for the validation program. After making it through the first round, we had to give a three-minute pitch, followed by a Q&A session in front of seven judges from UtrechtInc. Later this day we got a phone call that we made it into the program. As you can imagine, this was big news for us.

How were the two weeks of the program?

The validation is a 10-week program in which every startup has to prove that there is actually a problem that is being solved. This has do be done by collecting customer data that shows that we have a product that actually fits the market.

Part of the program are sessions with a startup coach who helps us set goals, provides feedback, and makes sure we are on track. In addition, we have masterclasses given by industry experts on many of the different challenges a startup faces such as customer development, financing, or pitching.

What’s the team spirit like?

To be honest, the first two weeks have been hard for us, especially mentally. As mentioned in the blog post before, the highs are really high and the lows are really low. Last week we started the phase of customer development where we have to get insights from the customers we want to reach first. The rejection we had to deal with was actually very painful. After cold calling people and sending emails we did not get one single interview scheduled. But as always we have to iterate and try again. We’re looking forward to the challenge.

Talk soon and to all founders: keep going!
