The Shift to a Decentralized Development Process

At the beginning of 2019, the Pillar team was invited by our friends at Tarmac to visit Uruguay and take a closer look at how their company works. Tarmac had been working with Pillar in the development of our app for a few months, and going there and meeting the team in person could prove fruitful, strengthening our bonds.

Since I was already in Brazil, on vacation, it made sense for me to go — plus, I had never been to Uruguay.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by Juan, who happens to speak Brazilian-Portuguese fluently, so we hit it off immediately. I asked about the city, Montevideo, and what it was like living there.

After a short ride, we got to the Tarmac office — a beautiful house converted into a working space in the centre of the capital.

Uruguayans proved to be super friendly. They made sure that every client felt at home, even though we were in an office. It was in realizing this that I first had a glimpse of Tarmac’s culture.

I asked Juan about his experience working for Tarmac. He had only the nicest things to say. But I only truly understood his words when I felt them myself — when I saw it.

The team we spent most of our time with was, obviously, those working in the development of the Pillar app. From the get-go we were friends. Not colleagues — friends. The relationship between our team and Tarmac’s was a direct result of the culture present there. Not to sound too cheesy, but yeah.

This kind of relationship only makes it easier and smoother to solve issues, overcome challenges, come up with new ideas… Because in being close, there’s freedom of thought, there’s confidence. And those traits lead to a boost in productivity.

Without a doubt, the joint forces of Pillar and Tarmac will make the grand vision of the Pillar platform, and eventually the Pull ecosystem, a possibility. We’re now working faster, and more efficiently than ever, and that’s because both teams understand the importance of our goals, breeding this great synergy.

If you’d like more than just taking my word for it, I suggest you watch this mini-interview I shot with Drew — the Product Owner at Pillar — and Brent — Tarmac’s CTO.

Meeting the people involved in turning Pillar’s vision into reality was great. And I’m sure we’ll all be proud of what we’ll accomplish together.
